While certain famous authors drew inspiration from local graveyards and colourful streets, we at Urban Trails decided it was high time Scotland’s capital got its own slightly unhinged magical academy.
Enter Bogthistle Academy of Magic and Sorcery.
We are thrilled to launch our newest self-guided Edinburgh walking trail: The Bogthistle Sorting Ceremony. Designed with families, kids, and curious minds in mind, this interactive outdoor adventure turns the heart of Auld Reekie into a playful sorting ceremony led by the enthusiastic, slightly foggy ghost of 16th-century sorcerer Rychard “Richie” Grahame.

Rather than following a fixed walking tour, players on The Bogthistle Sorting Ceremony navigate an adaptive, choice-driven storyline. Every decision a group makes helps calibrate which of Bogthistle’s four prestigious houses they truly belong to:
- Lionsledge: For the brave, daring, and bold.
- Shooglesoot: For the ambitious, driven, and cunning (Richie’s own alma mater!).
- Crowfoote: For the clever, curious, and bookish.
- Wifflewafft: For the just, loyal, and snack-inclined.
Along the way, the trail presents fork-in-the-road moments where kids and adults decide their next move together. Choose a path focused on clever observation through world-class museum halls, or opt for an ambitious route through ancient kirkyards. Later, weigh up bravery against justice at historic landmarks along the Royal Mile. The choices belong entirely to the players, leading to a unique sorting outcome for every group.

While Richie leads young witches and wizards through magical tasks, every single stop is grounded in authentic Edinburgh history and local lore.
Over the course of the walk, families will discover:
- An authentic 11th-century Viking Runestone hidden near George Square, carved by a man named Erik a thousand years ago.
- The legacy of Dr Winifred Rushforth OBE, a pioneering Edinburgh psychoanalyst who dedicated her career to exploring the dual nature of the human mind.
- The dark history of the Witches' Well, commemorating the hundreds of innocent people persecuted on the Castle Esplanade centuries ago.
- The origins of Victoria Street and West Bow, including the tales of 17th-century local figures and the sheer volume of legal manoeuvrings required to keep phantom lawyers happy.
We have carefully crafted every puzzle so families can solve them using physical details in the environment around them. No prior wizarding knowledge required, just a keen eye and a bit of teamwork.

We built this trail to be genuinely fun for all ages, but there is real cognitive science behind why interactive walking tours work so well for developing children's minds.
When we move through physical space whilst solving a puzzle, we unlock what neuroscientists call spatial hypothesis testing.
