Urban Trails Oxford Early Access: Our First Public Self-Guided Puzzle Trail Is Live!

We have a big milestone to share: Urban Trails has officially gone live in early access in Oxford. This is our first narrative driven, self guided puzzle trail that anyone can play in the wild, and we are incredibly excited to see how players explore the city, test the experience and help us shape the final version.

If you have been looking for a self guided walking tour in Oxford that is a bit more interactive than following a leaflet or audio guide, this early access release is your chance to try something new, give feedback and be part of the launch story from the very beginning.

Why Oxford Is Our First Self-Guided Puzzle Trail

Urban Trails started close to home. Our founder lives in Oxfordshire, which meant Oxford was the city we understood most deeply: the cut throughs, the quieter streets, the way the centre feels in all seasons, not just on postcard days. Beginning here was a deliberate choice, because it allowed us to design and refine the first trail with the kind of everyday familiarity you only get from living nearby.

That local connection also happens to align perfectly with what Urban Trails is built for. We look for compact, walkable historic centres where real architecture, plaques and viewpoints can carry a story and support puzzle led exploration. Oxford ticks all of those boxes, so it became the natural place to launch our first public experience, not as a one off experiment but as the opening chapter in a wider series of narrative driven, self guided puzzle tours that apply the same story first approach in other cities.

What the Oxford Early Access Experience Looks Like

The Oxford early access experience is a web based, self guided puzzle tour you run from your phone. You buy access online, head to the starting point in the city centre and then follow a curated route that blends local history, guided narration and puzzles that use the real environment as your source of truth.

Along the way you can expect:

  • A clear, curated walking route that keeps you in the most interesting parts of Oxford without feeling like you are being marched from stop to stop.
  • Story led puzzles that ask you to read the streets carefully, from stonework and inscriptions to statues and signs.
  • Guidance on your phone so you always know where you are heading next, without needing to follow a flag or stay glued to a group.
  • Plenty of space for your own pace – you can pause for coffee, lunch or photo stops whenever you like and pick up where you left off.

This is early access, which means the core experience is in place, but we are still fine tuning details such as difficulty level, pacing and how we explain certain clues and story beats.

How the Oxford Early Access Release Works (And How to Take Part)

Taking part in early access is simple:

  1. Buy access online – head to the Oxford trail page on the Urban Trails website and purchase a ticket for your group.
  2. Head to the starting point – bring your phone to the designated starting location in Oxford city centre.
  3. Follow the on screen instructions – the web app will guide you from stop to stop, presenting story, clues and puzzles as you go.
  4. Complete the trail and share your thoughts – at the end, we will invite you to tell us what worked, what did not and what you would like to see next.

You can play in your own time, whether that is a focused afternoon with friends or a slower loop broken up by cafés and photo breaks.

Why Start with a Self-Guided Puzzle Tour in Oxford?

Oxford is full of excellent guided walking tours, and there is a good chance you will want to try some of them too. Our view is that a self guided puzzle trail makes an ideal first step:

  • You meet the city on your own terms – no fixed tour times, no rushing to keep up with a group, no pressure to move on before you are ready.
  • You get a scouting loop of the city – as you solve clues, you will naturally spot museums, pubs, bookshops and side streets you might want to come back to.
  • You get to discover details you might otherwise miss – the puzzles encourage you to look up, read, count and notice things most people walk past.

After that first self guided pass, you can always book a guided tour or tickets to specific attractions in the areas that caught your eye. The early access release is designed to help you build that first, personal connection to the city.

What We Are Hoping to Learn from Early Access

Because this is our first public release, the Oxford early access launch is as much about listening as it is about launching. We are particularly interested in:

  • Difficulty and clarity – are the puzzles pitched at the right level, and are the instructions clear without over explaining?
  • Pacing – does the route feel too long, too short or about right for a few hours of exploring?
  • Accessibility and comfort – how does the walk feel in terms of steps, cobbles and crossing busy points in the city?
  • Technical reliability – does the experience feel smooth on your device, even when signal drops or you take a detour?

Your real world experience in the streets of Oxford is the best way for us to answer those questions and improve things before a full launch.

How to Share Feedback

At the end of the trail, we will prompt you to share your thoughts on the experience. You can also reach out via the contact details on the Urban Trails website if there is something specific you would like to tell us about. Detailed notes are always welcome, but even quick, honest impressions such as whether it felt too easy, too hard or just right are incredibly useful at this stage.

Be Part of the First Wave in Oxford

Launching the Oxford early access release is a big moment for Urban Trails: it is the first time our self guided puzzle tour concept is fully accessible to the public in a live city environment. If you like the idea of turning a walk into a story, enjoy solving clues and want a different kind of thing to do in Oxford, we would love you to join the first wave of players, put the route through its paces and help us shape what comes next.

Head to the Oxford trail page, grab your ticket and see what you notice when the city itself becomes part of the puzzle.
